Tax the Rich?

Taxing the nameless, faceless, abstract “rich” is always a popular notion that tends to poll well with the American public. Aside getting into the semantics of identifying exactly what the definition of “rich” is, I ask a much simpler, more basic question. Despite where the Federal Government gets it, can they really be trusted with any more of our money, regardless of where it came from?! I would guess the collective answer to this question is a resounding NO, regardless of your party affiliation or income class. While it may be tempting to go along with President Obama on this so-called “Buffet Tax” on the rich you must first question why the Federal Government would suddenly be wise and responsible with taxpayers money, be those taxpayers “rich” or not. The best example of this waste of taxpayer’s hard earned money is the Solyndra scandal. The green energy company Solyndra was given $535 million in “stimulus” funds by the Obama administration, thanks to American taxpayers. The Bush administration had previously denied a loan to this company due to the company’s already precarious financial footing, an air of desperation among its executives, and risk of bankruptcy. Bankruptcy indeed happened, but not before over a ½ billion dollars was given to the company as part of President Obama’s failed “stimulus program” and equally disappointing “green jobs initiative.” President Obama and Vice-President Biden personally touted Solyndra as not only the future of green energy, but also of green job creation. Jobs were not created, in fact, the company’s doors are now closed, with more than 1,100 of its employees out of work, and hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars wasted. So, before you give in to the drumbeat of “tax the rich” why not stop to ponder why exactly the government needs more of our money in the first place? Why are our elected officials attempting to simply redirect blame rather than come up with real solutions? And, why are they trying to pit Americans against one another in what amounts to nothing more than class warfare? I think you all know the answer.

There is no free lunch!

“There is no free lunch”. Beginning in the 1850’s taverns advertised free lunches given to those who bought liquid libation at their establishment. The price of the food was paid for by naive patrons through higher prices for beer. I’d guess alcohol in the brain leads to mushy, muddled thinking to believe you’d get something for nothing. So it goes with”free handouts” or higher taxes for business, mushy heads think it is free. The catch is you pay more and you loose your freedoms.

Today, these free lunches are government entitlements and handouts to buy votes. Someone pays for overpriced union health insurance, public union membership compulsion and ensuing fees, and increased government regulation of your choices. Can you say mercury light bulbs, job killing green energy mandates and Obamacare waivers? Well guess what, you and I pay more in taxes, hidden fees, loss of economic freedoms, and loss of private property protections.

Don’t be suckered by thinking you are getting something for nothing – there’s no such thing as a free lunch. This 4^th of July take some time to reflect on the cost of your liberty and freedom.

Parade Charade

At the first official parade of the season, Arcadia’s Broiler Days parade, it was evident that this is not your normal “non-election” year in Wisconsin politics. With tensions running high and ridiculous recalls looming, at the hefty expense of taxpayers I might add, politicians are out in full force to perfect their images as all things sunshine and roses.

Senator Vinehout was present, busy pandering the parade route with an adorable, although borrowed, dog. It was nice to see our Senator back in the state, the state that she was elected to represent, having returned from her glorified temper-tantrum/union-funded vacation in Illinois.

Speaking of temper-tantrums, our Assemblyman Chris Danou was at the parade too, and I must say, it was a pleasure to see him on his best behavior, throwing candy to children instead of a fit, like the water thrown at his peers in the Assembly. It was also refreshing to see him wave hellos and exclaim pleasant greetings along the parade route, rather than pointing fingers and screaming “Shame, Shame, Shame!” at his Republican counterparts.

And, from what I could tell, both Vinehout and Danou were in their own clothes, instead of their union issued garb, you know, those matching colored t-shirts of “solidarity.” Nothing like being visually branded to make clear to the world just who owns you and your party, in case there was ever any doubt.

Finally, Congressman Ron Kind was there too, handing out his traditional “Be ‘Kind’ to Kids” stickers, a cute play on words that would be a whole lot cuter had he not supported every single pro-abortion measure ever brought before him, including continuing tax payer funded abortions at Planned Parenthood, both at home and abroad.

And so, with parade season just getting underway, please do not forget the abhorrent and juvenile behavior of our elected Democrat representatives. The behavior that was organic to them, not calculated and contrived as these parade appearances are. Do not be lured in with free candy, cute puppies, and fake smiles. These tokens are merely representations of the handouts Democrats promise to so many, but fail to deliver on so often. Do not feel entitled to anything from our elected officials, other than the truth- and the truth is the thing that they are least willing to give.

Trempealeau County Supreme Court Recount Results

Trempealeau County Board Chairman Wally Geske stated the following in a letter about the recount demanded by Joanne Kloppenburg for Wisconsin Supreme Court: "The recent Wisconsin Supreme Court recount in Trempealeau County resulted in a zero "0" change. This should give citizens of Trempealeau County confidence in our elections and is a credit to Paul Syverson and his dedicated poll workers. Congratulations on a job well done. Even though there were no changes in the final count, there were ramifications. It took 10 workers three and one-half days to complete the task. It cost the taxpayers of the county $3,402.05. Thank you Ms Kloppenburg for adding this to our county budget."

The letter was then composed and approved by the 3rd District Executive Committee and all the County Chairs. Shameless is defined as having or showing no feeling of shame, modesty or decency; brazen, or impudent.

Shameless is standing in the Senate chambers shouting; Shame! Shame! Shame! at your fellow workers because they have a different viewpoint and vote than yours. At least this time the 14 Senators were in the Wisconsin chambers not in Illinois hiding out, though most – including Senator Vinehout - did not voice a roll call vote though asked twice.

Its about time Voter ID is law. My vote will not be disenfranchised. I will gladly show my photo ID to confirm who I am and live in the district in which I vote. I like that my vote will not be cancelled due to the fraud of others. We must show photo ID for over the counter sinus medication, to write a check, buy a pack of cigarettes, visit the Doctor, get insurance, join the military, go to college, get married, open a PO Box, apply for food stamps, get Badgercare, etc … Just about everything in life … and now to vote.

Supreme Court Recount: Trempealeau County

The recount for the WI Supreme Court Race between Justice David Prosser and Joanne Kloppenburg begins Wednesday. Those that would like to help oversee the recount in Trempealeau County, should report to the Trempealeau County Courthouse in Whitehall at the County Board Room tomorrow morning.

The schedule for recount is as follows:

9:00am-Noon (Start)

Noon-1:00 (Lunch Break)

1:00-4:30 (Resume)

The recount will resume on Thursday and Friday, if necessary, at the same times. The Trempealeau County recount should be complete by Friday. The deadline given for the statewide recount is May 9th.

Incumbent Justice David Prosser won the election by 7,316 votes over challenger Joanne Kloppenburg. Prosser declared victory on April 18th after official state canvassing was complete. Kloppenburg decided to request a taxpayer funded recount. The cost of this recount is estimated to be a minimum of $575,000. The largest number of votes ever recovered during a recount in Wisconsin was 489.

Gov. Walker's First 100 Days

As a taxpayer, lifelong Wisconsinite, policeman’s daughter, and mother of two young children, I am concerned by Mr. Danou’s and Ms. Vinehout’s constant attacks on Governor Walker. I stand proudly with Gov. Walker and applaud his efforts to make the necessary cuts to keep Wisconsin open for business.

Ms. Vinehout’s recent letter printed in the Blair Press contained several negative constituent excerpts in response to Governor Walker’s Budget. Naturally, the responses she used were largely from state and union workers or people working for small town local government. Ms. Vinehout is not accurately portraying her constituency. Not one excerpt hailed Gov. Walker’s budget, and yet there are many of her constituents who do.

Serious cuts do need to be made. However, I understand in order to fix our great state and nation, sacrifices need to be made too. Simply and practically stated, many groups need to learn to live with less. There are some wonderful programs out there, but right now Wisconsin needs to focus on repairing and growing the state economy by whatever means necessary. Gov. Walker does not make decisions lightly, nor does he make them maliciously.

Vinehout and Rep. Danou hear your voices too. We need to effectively communicate our support for Gov. Walker and political solidarity to our legislators to encourage equal and fair representation, not merely the one-sided bias that has been overtly portrayed in the local newspapers.

Supreme Court Judge David Prosser is up for re-election on Tuesday, April 5th. It’s an important seat for WI Supreme Court. Honorary Judge Prosser is known to be moderate in his opinions and uses the Wisconsin Constitution when ruling on each case. It is important to the people of Wisconsin that he retains this seat.

David Prosser was born in Chicago and grew up in Appleton, WI. He was appointed by Governor Tommy Thompson in 1998 and was then elected in 2001. His term is up this year, but his experience and track record of serving the people of Wisconsin is extraordinary. For example: Outagamie County DA, WI State Assembly for the Appleton area, six years as Assembly minority leader and two years as Assembly Speaker, member of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws and before joining the Supreme Court, Justice Prosser served on the WI Tax Appeals Commission. He has the experience necessary to ensure the rights of the people of Wisconsin are upheld.

I believe Judge Prosser is a Wisconsin Supreme Court Judge that will be willing to assist our newly elected representatives to get things done, allowed by our State Constitution, instead of hindering the change that is necessary to get Wisconsin back on track quickly. Wisconsin is currently ranked in the top 10 of the 50 states with the highest debt per capita and we need to get this under control now.

Write in Anthony Nelson for G-E-T School Board

Whose interests are best served by the current District Superintendent and G-E-T School Board? I would submit it is neither yours nor mine. Due to the obvious ethical deficiencies, inherent in situations concerning nepotism, the tax payer is, at a minimum, under represented. There are members of the District Board who have relatives who either are teaching or working for the school district in some other capacity. When school was canceled due to a high volume of “sick” teachers on February 17th, do you think the board would take disciplinary action towards those teachers who traveled to Madison, rather than to stay and teach our children? Why should they? Their spouses and other family members are on the payroll. Look at the staff directory on the G-E-T website.

Dr. Grace was questioned if there was a policy in place for teachers and staff who falsely call in sick, and he claimed there isn’t one. He was asked for a list of teachers who called in sick on February 17th, but he said that list does not exist. The verbiage is such that, even with open request policies it is very difficult to get information from our particular district. One of the At-Large Board Members seat is up for election Tuesday April 5th. That seat is currently held by Paul Halderson, the farmer with a 2000-head dairy operation. While Mr. Halderson makes great contributions to the community, how can we expect him to be objective with a wife and daughter both teaching in the district.

According to Board Member Code of Conduct and Ethics Policy # 165, Board Members shall:

5. Render all decisions based on the available facts and my independent judgment, and refuse to surrender that judgment to individuals or special interest groups; And,

13. Avoid being placed in a position of conflict of interest.

It would seem that Mr. Halderson has two priorities before that of the district students and taxpayers. What is needed is someone who has no family members on the district payroll. We need someone who will not potentially encourage his wife and daughter to call in sick to attend protests in Madison. The responsibility of the School Board and Superintendent lies with the taxpayers and students. How can we expect Mr. Halderson to uphold his obligations to us when members of his immediate family are on the payroll of the district?

I am asking you to write in a concerned parent, Anthony Nelson, for this elected position. Anthony will put G-E-T’s children first, including two of his own. Anthony is a hardworking taxpayer just like you. He is a concerned, intelligent citizen who makes informed and well researched decisions. As a computer programmer, he brings a technical edge to the table. As a father, he brings student perspective.

Anthony is also frustrated by board decisions, including the bussing of several town (Galesville) children to Ettrick (his eldest daughter being one of them). He is frustrated by the methodologies in which money is sought through referendum after referendum. Did you know that between 1998 and 2008, Wisconsin doubled the amount of money spent per pupil, yet proficiency went unchanged? Anthony Nelson wants to help to correct that, starting in his own community, with his children and yours.

Anthony is a solid candidate that will breathe new life into an otherwise stagnant board.

He may ruffle some feathers, but more importantly, he will listen. Please help to elect a fresh-ideas guy, a well-informed father, and a fiscally pragmatic citizen to the G-E-T School Board on Tuesday April 5th. Write in Anthony Nelson.

Supreme Court Election is Critical

While non-partisan, Spring Elections typically garner low turn-out and lack of attention, I would like to remind the voters in Trempealeau County how critical Supreme Court elections are. This election is particularly important as it will determine the direction of our court, and state, because this election represents the swing vote on the court. Depending on the outcome of this single race, the court will either move to the left with liberal jurists who attempt to legislate from the bench or it will be kept it in the hands of constructionists that adhere to the constitution of both our state and nation. With this election, there is the potential for major impact on property owners and rural living, with farmers especially affected. Given our county’s large rural and agricultural community, I would imagine this is a real concern. Property owners and farmers are in danger of losing control of their own land management if the court swings liberal. DNR regulation, eminent domain, local control of zoning, and environmental causes are all real threats that property owners may face with a liberally influenced court. Traditional family values would be under attack with a liberal leaning court too. Traditional marriage, respect for life, school choice, freedom of religion, and 2nd Amendment Rights will all be fair game for new interpretation. Given our area’s strong family systems, belief in traditional values, and high church-going population these are issues we typically seek to protect. I ask you to not only vote on Tuesday, April 5th, but I also plead with you to recognize the importance of this election and to become an informed voter! I realize emotions are running high in our state right now, but do not rely on outlandish attack ads, leaders of third party special interest groups, talking heads on television, or politicians to make your decision for you. Rather, vote your own values! Investigate the records of each candidate for yourself and make your own determination based on the issues that are important to you and the experience and credentials that each candidate has. This election is every bit as important as the November election was, I encourage you to participate in it.

"Collective Bargaining is not a Right"

Collective bargaining for public employees is not a right. Collective bargaining is a privilege, a benefit, a collection of work rules, it is a special power granted by the legislature to some government unions. These rules are often negotiated to the detriment of taxpayers who are being swindled by a system in which their interests come second. The unions use coerced dues and over priced health insurance moneys to elect officials who in turn grant the unions even more power.

A few examples of the insanity of collective bargaining benefits to Wisconsin public employees:

1. On a state level, the Department of Corrections allows correctional workers who call in sick to collect overtime if they work a shift on the exact same day. Cost to Wisconsin taxpayers $4.8 million.

2. Management is not allowed to schedule workers based on operational needs. Unions require notice and approval prior to employee scheduling changes. Government cannot explore privatization of functions that could save taxpayers money.

3. Many school districts participate in WEA trust which is a union run cadillac health insurance plan. Union leadership benefits from members participating in this over priced plan. Wisconsin school districts could save up to up to $68 million per year by changing to the State plan. Even more could be saved if districts shopped around per flexibility of the Budget Repair Bill.

4. Employment based on seniority rather than performance. Employees laid off may bump less senior employees. Several years ago, bumping led to five employees moving into different positions at the Trempealeau County Courthouse, each having to learn new jobs. This decreases government efficiency to the community and increases costs.

5. Retirement is based on average of last three years pay. Employees game the system by working overtime, adding state programs to base wage, etc to stack retirement benefits.

Gov. Scott Walker’s budget repair bill does not infringe on public employees right to associate and lobby government. It does give public employees freedom to choose not to join a union and be able keep their job at the same time. It tells government unions to collect their own union dues instead of using the power of the state to withhold them directly from employee paychecks. It stops the entitlement mentality of collective bargaining and restores sanity to government for the taxpayer.

I am angry that the constituents of the 31st Senate District of Wisconsin are not being represented in Madison. Our Senator Kathleen Vinehout seems to think a vacation in Illinois is better than going to work in Madison and voicing the concerns of her constituents. She was elected by taxpayers to do a job yet she thinks fleeing the state is somehow noble and a fun thing to do.My Representative Chris Danou did show up for work in the assembly but his actions of throwing papers and water at republican representatives during a floor session is inexcusable and would have be considered disorderly conduct if it was done by a protester. As a former law enforcement officer he should be ashamed of himself and apologize to the entire Assembly for his bad behavior. Debate and discussion is the heart of democracy. Throwing fits during sessions or running away like a spoiled child because you disagree with an issue is an insult to all the hard working people in the districts of these lawmakers who pay their salaries. It is our money and we demand better representation than that. I support Governor Walker and the Budget Repair Bill to get Wisconsin fiscally on track.

As to the provisions that increase state employees’ contributions to their health insurance costs, which are overpriced “Cadillac” plans and pensions, which they contribute not a nickel – it’s about time.

Also, to “manage spending reductions through changing some provisions of the state’s collective bargaining laws” is greatly needed. As a former county supervisor I saw first hand that unions had more influence over decisions on managing our county budget than elected officials. It seems union members choose to elect those who will vote them largess from taxpayers and costs to taxpayers spiral out of control. This spending is not sustainable. The present system does not serve our State well and must be changed to better reflect the economic reality of private citizens and our Constitutional government

As to teachers lying about being sick and walking off the job. This teaches children: one, lying and deception are acceptable. Second, political ideology trumps the Constitutional process. Third, powerful unions are more important than “the children”. Shame on you.

The Republican Party of Trempealeau County's Executive Committee, along with neighboring Republican parties of Buffalo, Pepin, Jackson, Clark and Pierce counties find the actions of the 14 Democrat state senators, including Sen. Kathleen Vinehout of the 31st District, cowardly and disrespectful to the democratic process, as well as to the constituents they represent. These 14 elected officials fled the state, rather than do their constitutional duty and vote.

The Republican leadership of western Wisconsin, and, a majority of Americans, support Gov. Scott Walker’s “Budget Repair Bill.” This bill is a necessary action to balance the budget of Wisconsin’s current 3.6 billion-dollar deficit, and to lessen the burden on taxpayers during this economic crisis. The bill also reasserts the power of local governance in collective bargaining.

When an overwhelming majority of Republicans in Congress (as well as American citizens) opposed nationalizing health care, Republican representatives and senators still did their constitutional duty and showed up to debate and vote on the bill. With its unpopular passage, Americans were merely told that “elections have consequences.” Indeed they do. The citizens of Wisconsin overwhelmingly voted for a Republican majority last November and they deserve to be represented. The Republican governor and legislature should be allowed to govern as the citizens of Wisconsin have duly elected them to do, without impedance through political desertion. We support the disciplinary remedies as voted on and discussed by the legislature to reprimand the wayward representatives. We call for the 14 Democrat senators to respect the representative process and return to the Capitol immediately to debate the issues and to cast their votes.

Our County Caucus will be held this Saturday, January 22nd at the Ashley Furniture Homestore Community Room in Arcadia. The Caucus will start promptly at 12:00 pm with plans to finish by 6:00pm. Refreshments will be served. Lunch and menu items are also available at The Pub restaurant within the Ashley Homestore.

The County Caucus will involve the business of the Republican Party of Trempealeau County and preparation for the 3rd District Caucus. This is also an officer election year for the RPTC Executive Committee. The current Executive Committee members are Dave Anderson (Chair), Dave Vind (Vice Chair), Kim Low (Secretary), and Valerie Pierzina (Treasurer). The election of new officers will be held at the County Caucus.

Submission and adoption of County Resolutions will also take place. Please have any Resolutions ready to submit. Additionally, 2 persons will be appointed to participate on the Resolutions, Rules, and Credentials Committees for the District Pre-Caucus and District Caucus held in March (tentative dates are March 12th and 26th respectively). Please consider submitting your name for one of these committees. Finally, the revisions of Constitution of the Republican Party of Trempealeau County will be presented and voted on acceptance. The final draft will then be submitted to the Republican Party of Wisconsin for approval.

It is vitally important that we have good attendance at our County Caucus so that Trempealeau County will have a strong representation at both the District Caucus and at the State Convention. In order to become a Delegate or Alternate for District and State, it is strongly recommended that you attend the County Caucus for consideration. All members in good standing are encouraged to submit their names for this privilege. Delegates and Alternates must be voted on at the County Caucus and subsequently submitted to the 3rd District Chair by March 1st for approval.

The conservative movement showed its strength this election, with sweeping victories across the nation, leading to Republican gains of historic proportions in the House. Additionally, Wisconsin is the state that arguably made the biggest political shift in the nation, being the only state where Democrats lost the office of Governor, a US Senate seat, and an entire state legislature. However, even though Republicans turned out in Trempealeau County and we probably had our best conservative showing in years, Trempealeau County remains a Democrat stronghold. Sure there are glimmers of hope as the margins are closer than normal and there were actually two Republican victories in our county with the very popular JB Van Hollen easily winning our county and Ron Johnson who won our county by the slimmest of margins. What is it about Trempealeau County, and the entire 3rd District to some degree, that prevents it from recognizing we really are conservative here? We are self-reliant hard-workers who cherish faith and family. We are simply not liberal! Yet, Trempealeau County is as consistent a shoe-in for Democrats as San Francisco and New York City! It isn't as though we have conservative blue-dog Democrats winning here either; we have Ron Kind who has a voting record matching that of Nancy Pelosi 94% of the time. Yet, Ron Kind skated to an easy victory in Trempealeau County. I am pleased and hopeful with the outcome of the election as a whole, but I am perplexed and disappointed with the returns in my county. If anything points out the disconnect in our county, it is the overwhelming victory of the conservative Transportation Fund referendum, a referendum written due to Democrat abuse of these appropriated funds. Had the "No" vote on this Referendum had a (D) behind it, it likely would not have passed in Trempealeau County, as they are that entrenched here. Without a a doubt, Trempealeau County holds common sense, conservative values. Apparently voters here just don't realize what political party represents those values. There is much work that needs to be done in our county and 2012 is not too far away. With a Republican Governor and legislature, along with our continued efforts as a county party, residents will hopefully come to recognize what conservatism really is, what Republicans actually stand for, and that Democrats are not what they claim to be. The fight goes on.

I first heard the name 'Dave Westlake' at the 2009 Republican State Convention in La Crosse. Dave was there to bravely announce his candidacy for US Senate against Russ Feingold at a time when the Republican brand was not at all popular and Constitutional conservatism was thought to be near extinction. I signed up for his e-mails and took a business card without giving it much thought. Later, I found Dave on facebook and YouTube making impassioned historical comparisons, touting our nation’s first principles, and promoting conservative ideas reminiscent of Goldwater himself. The first time I met Dave in person was at our county’s Lincoln Day Dinner the following January. By now he had taken on the symbolic “blaze orange” garb and already put thousands of miles of “campaign highway” on his unmistakable white SUV. It struck me that Dave recognized me and knew my name immediately, through merely being one of his numerous “facebook friends.” Dave Westlake is a genuine individual, a man of character and depth. He is someone who will lead the fight, not just claim to join it . . . after all, who is there really to join? Dave is strong, principled and fights for his convictions, yet even if you disagree with him, it is impossible not to like him. Dave looks you in the eye and listens to what you are saying. In other words, he is not your typical politician. Eventually more candidates joined the race and most have faded away, but Dave Westlake has remained constant, committed to the cause and positive that Wisconsin desperately craves something other than “politics as usual.” Dave Westlake faces a very wealthy, party endorsed, GOP template of an opponent in the Republican primary on Tuesday. Even with this difficult challenge, Dave Westlake has never lost faith in himself or his devoted grassroots team. Back in 2009 I never expected that I would become so closely involved with his campaign and feel so passionate about a politician, but I am very thankful I did and feel blessed I got to know the man, the candidate, the leader, that is Dave Westlake. I pray that voters choose to get to know him better too. Please vote for Dave Westlake in the Republican Primary on September 14th. Thank you.

All Politics is Local: a blessing or a curse?

Primary elections in Wisconsin do not always garner a high voter turnout, with past percentages typically in the range of 9-17%. This year is different however. The voter turnout is expected to reach as high as 28% as estimated by the Government Accountability Board. That would be the highest voter turnout in the history of our state, with the highest being 27.9% in 1964. There are many reasons for renewed interest in the primary process. For one, voters have simply become more aware and more engaged than in years past as they recognize that elected officials are no longer listening to or accurately representing the will of the people. Much of this realization has been sparked by the persistent presence of the TEA Party movement. Another reason this primary in particular has such strong interest is that most of the races are also contested. The Governor’s office is open, there is a primary for US Senate, and there are contested primaries in numerous constitutional offices as well as congressional seats. While most of the action and interesting races are plainly on the Republican side of the ticket, “politics is local,” as the old saying goes, and local races often drive elections. Wisconsin adheres to an “Open Primary” system which does not require voters to register (and subsequently vote) with one specific party. However, while it is an “Open Primary” in that regard, voters are still required to declare one party at the ballot box and are not allowed to cross-over and vote for candidates of both political parties within the same primary. On the September 14th Primary, Wisconsin voters will choose either a Republican ballot or a Democrat ballot. My concern with this on the local level is that Trempealeau County is already a Democrat County. Couple that with the fact that there is a hot button race for Trempealeau County Sheriff on the Democrat side, and no real contested primaries locally on the Republican side, and this could add up to a low voter turnout on the Republican side of the ticket in Trempealeau County’s primary election. As a side note, even the Republican candidates themselves are not doing all they can to increase their voter turnout. Many Republican candidates encourage voting in the September 14th Primary on their campaign literature, but fail to mention anywhere they are a Republican or stress a vote in the Republican Primary. Republicans must be comfortable calling themselves Republican to ensure voters know where to find them on the primary ballot. Anyway, even though I would argue there is clearly more at stake on the Republican side, and a vote there would certainly have more impact, politics is local and people may feel more connected to a local race. This is why I was so disheartened to hear that Terry Daffinson, chose to primary the Democrat incumbent Sheriff Richard Anderson instead of running as a Republican. First of all, I believe a lot of Daffinson's support would come from Republicans, (who hopefully still choose to vote in the Republican primary)! And, secondly, there is no one running for Sheriff as a Republican which would have ensured Terry make it to the general with the support of the Republican Party of Trempealeau County at his back, a group that has become very strong and dedicated over the past couple years. In closing, this one local race could alter our own Republican turnout in the county. I hope this is not true and I know the Republican Party of Trempealeau County has done all it possibly can to promote and educate residents on the importance of the Republican primary vote. Now, we will just have to wait and see if all those efforts paid off or if citizens of Trempealeau County decide to keep it local.

~~While I have always been politically-minded, I was never actively involved in any political organization until after the election and inauguration of our current President, Barack Obama. The “historic” election and the obvious shift towards a new, socialist America motivated me to become involved, just as it did for so many others in this great nation of ours. Knowing I was a conservative Republican, I chose to become active in my county’s Republican Party. Countless other Americans decided to get involved too. Some chose to join this new conservative revolution by also joining the Republican Party, while others went to the Libertarians or Constitutionalists. The vast majority of folks, however, joined the “TEA Party” movement, which subscribes to conservative principles but, despite its name, refuses any “party” identification or label. New to the political scene some of these newfound activists may not have realized the ideas of less spending, smaller government, and personal responsibility actually were the very platform of the Republican Party. Most were likely well aware of this fact, but no longer trusted the GOP to uphold these principles. It is up to Republicans to regain that trust.
~~The TEA Party is inspiring and powerful. It is also principled. It is not about winning or losing or any of the usual games of politics. It is about something much more pure, something much less demagogic and more ideologic. It is about keeping this nation one of freedom as our founders’ imagined, adhering to the Constitution as our founders’ intended, and preserving the aforementioned for future generations. In a word, it is about Liberty.
~~I consider myself first and foremost a Republican, but I am also proud to say I am active in the TEA Party as well. After all, we are all on the same side essentially, the side of conservatism and constitution. I was surprised to find that not so many think as I do, however. What I have discovered instead is that many longtime, active-party Republicans are not that open to tea partiers or comfortable with the movement that has taken hold. It is almost as though they feel offended that the TEA Party did not turn to the GOP or that the old-guard Republican establishment did not come up with the idea themselves. In some respect, I do understand the Republican predicament. It is a catch-22. The media and Democrats initially wanted to brand the TEA Party as nothing more than Republican orchestrated “astro-turf.” The leaders of the GOP recognized this set-up immediately. Republicans wanted to acknowledge the TEA Party for the grassroots movement for which it is and therefore did not claim the TEA Party as its own. Yet, by not declaring the TEA Party “Republican,” at least in association, many tea partiers felt they did not have a home in the GOP after all. I believe this is where the conflict between the two groups began, which is unfortunate. The Republican Party simply cannot lose out on this opportunity to gain Republican voters (notice I did not say members) this election. The TEA Party needs to find it has friends in the GOP, for the GOP most certainly has friends in the TEA Party!
~~Failing to recognize the TEA Party’s influence on our current political scene is a disservice not only to the TEA Party movement but also the very Republican candidates the GOP is trying to get elected. Especially because conservative Republican candidates, for the most part, have done a great job involving the TEA Party. Democrat candidates have not. That alone should speak volumes with no “TEA Party endorsement” required. I do not believe the TEA Party needs to make endorsements or declare their allegiance to any one party either; the appeal, and clout, of the TEA Party movement is their independence. That independence is why they are a force to be reckoned with and have influence over voters more than any single political party or organization on our political landscape. It also should be stressed that their ambiguity of party affiliation does not mean Republicans cannot co-exist with them and work toward a common goal.
~~I cannot for the life of me understand why some Republicans seem more than willing to lose out on this glaring opportunity. Is it pride or vanity or having to answer to others? Are such people members of the party truly for the cause of conservatism or is it more for ego-stroking and self-aggrandizing? I pray it truly is for the cause and members of the Republican Party can capture some of the excitement and motivation the TEA Party movement brings.
~~Along with the TEA Party as a whole, there are also a slew of single-cause conservative groups that I assert the GOP needs to be more inclusive of. I believe firmly in the idea of a conservative coalition, an alliance, if you will, with such groups as Fair Tax, Americans for Prosperity, Pro-Life organizations, Open Carry groups, the NRA, and countless others that are on the side of conservatism but choose to dedicate their time to one specific cause, rather than the party as a whole. We should not be fearful of their commitment to their cause. Rather, Republicans need to be bold, brave, and unapologetic for our conservative principles. We should take pride in defending our fellow conservative groups. It is time that we learn to stand up, speak out, and assert ourselves like the left has done with so much success for so many years! If we truly are the party that reveres the Constitution and seeks to protect 1st Amendment and 2nd Amendment rights, it is time we do so actively and openly, not with just talk.
~~It is my assertion, my plea, if you will, that the GOP openly embrace the TEA Party (as well as other conservative groups). The TEA Party, too, must see that their best bet is likely with Republican candidates, but this will only be realized if the GOP gives the TEA Party the recognition it deserves. There simply must be a way for these two conservative power-houses to work effectively together and respectfully apart. If there is not, we will all lose, and I am not just talking about losing seats in the House and Senate. We will lose freedoms and liberties, rights and protections, the likes of which our founding fathers could never have imagined. We have a grand opportunity, right here, right now, to prevent that from happening and to change the course our country is headed. Let’s not waste it.

Angeline Sylla Seeks Re-Election as Trempealeau County Clerk of Court

Angeline Sylla has announced that she is seeking re-election to the office of Trempealeau County Clerk of Court. She is the incumbent Clerk of Court and is experienced, hardworking, responsible and dedicated.

Some recent accomplishments in the Clerk of Court’s office include:
· Improved convenience-created the opportunity for individuals to pay Trempealeau County fees online with a credit card through the Wisconsin Circuit Court website and also to file certain paperwork electronically.
· Improved efficiency-implemented a system of document scanning to efficiently make information available to other agencies electronically and to reduce physical space needs.
· Improved access-added interpreters as needed for all types of communication barriers from language to hearing or reading issues.
· Improved financial management-incorporated an accounting system which allows improved access to State Court Grant Reimbursement Funds and tracking of the more than $1.2 million in fees collected by the Clerk of Court’s Office

The Clerk of Court’s office is responsible for all cases filed in Circuit Court. Circuit Court cases include civil and small claims, foreclosures, family, traffic, forfeitures, and criminal cases. The Clerk is also the acceptance agent for passport applications. A team of great employees works closely with Angeline to ensure that the Clerk of Court’s office operates efficiently, effectively, and with integrity regarding the protection of court records.

Angeline Sylla says, “I look forward to continuing to serve the needs of the residents of Trempealeau County in an efficient and effective manner.”

Angeline, an area native, lives in Independence with her husband, Daniel. They have a grown son who also resides in Independence with his wife and new baby. She is very involved in community, church, and professional groups such as the Rainbow Community Club and the Wisconsin Clerks of Circuit Court Association, for which Angeline served as the statewide association secretary. She has also participated in various work groups for development of programs within Trempealeau County. Angeline’s educational background includes a Bachelor’s Degree from Winona State University, ongoing continuing education and professional development courses, as well as a diploma from Independence High School and Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic School.

Our County Caucus will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2010, at the Ashley Furniture Homestore Community Room in Arcadia. This event will take place in lieu of our regularly scheduled February meeting. The Caucus will start promptly at 1:00 pm with plans to finish by 4:00 pm. Refreshments will be served. Lunch and menu items will be available at The Pub restaurant within the Ashley Homestore.

The County Caucus will involve the business of the Republican Party of Trempealeau County and preparation for the 3rd District Caucus. It is vitally important that we have good attendance at our County Caucus so that Trempealeau County will have a strong representation at both the District Caucus (which will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at the Plaza Hotel in Eau Claire) and at the State Convention (which will run from May 21- 23, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee). In order to become a Delegate or Alternate for District and State, it is strongly recommended that you attend the County Caucus for consideration. All members in good standing are encouraged to submit their names for this privilege. This year, Delegates and Alternates must be voted on at the County Caucus and submitted to the District Chair by March 1st for approval.

This promises to be an exciting year for Republicans as we look towards the 2010 Elections! And, we expect that you are just as engaged and enraged as we are with the current leadership! Last weekend, the Republican Party of Trempealeau County kicked-off of our brand new group, "Politics & Pints," at the Jailhouse Saloon in Centerville. It proved to be a very fun evening with good times had by all. This new group was created to be a casual and easy-going alternative to our regular monthly meetings. "Politics & Pints" is simply an informal social gathering where people come to talk politics over beer and a pizza. There is absolutely no set agenda, so you never know where the evening will take you or what solutions to the world's problems you will uncover after an evening of discussion! Meet with friends, new and old, vent your political frustrations, express ideas, and hang out in an environment where it is not taboo to talk politics. The location for each get-together will change from month to month, covering many of the fine towns and numerous eating & drinking establishments that Trempealeau County has to offer! (Needless to say, it should be quite some time before we are required to repeat a venue)! This is a wonderful networking opportunity and a great way to meet like-minded individuals. Pro-abortion Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has thrown his hat into the ring as a Democratic candidate for Governor of Wisconsin for the November 2, 2010 election. After enduring eight long years of consistently anti-life actions by retiring Governor Jim Doyle, right-to-life citizens long for change. They won’t find it in Tom Barrett. Viewed as a “nice guy,” Barrett is as nasty as Doyle when it comes to abortion. Barrett compiled a lengthy hard-core pro-abortion voting record when he served in the State Assembly, State Senate and House of Representatives.

Barrett State Legislative Record Highlights (1984 – 1992)

Voted in favor of taxpayer funding of abortion referrals.
Voted against protecting the unborn child of a pregnant woman on life supports.
Voted against the right-to-life position on 53 out of 55 votes.

Voted against the Child Custody Protection Act which would have made it a federal crime to take a minor across state lines to have an abortion to keep the abortion secret from her parents.

Palin at Mall of America by Diane Reid

Deloras Vind, and myself, Diane Reid, of the Republican Party of Trempealeau County, arrived at the Mall of America for the Sarah Palin, "Going Rogue" book signing at 4:30 am. We were in line outside the Mall by 5:00 am. We were approximately number 520 and 521. We thankfully got into the warmth of the Mall shorty after 6 o'clock and finally got wristbands after 7 o'clock.

Gov. Sarah Palin and her husband, Todd, were all smiles, ebullient, charming and happy to see every face that came by the table. Lots of people were equally bubbly and looked thrilled to meet them. Up close, Gov. Palin exudes a radiant grace! No other way to describe it. She and Todd looked refreshed. She is better looking in person and I didn't think it was possible. She glowed, she was friendly and engaging to each person and laughed a lot with each person.
I got my book signed by 1:00 pm. The crowd was friendly, polite and enthusiastic for the opportunity. I must give a special thanks to the Mall of America staff for the way they organized this event. Logistics were smooth all around. They even handed out free bottled water around 9:00 am when most people were in line, waiting. They handed out the water and then came back with trash bags to collect the trash. The whole MOA staff were courteous, ready to answer any question and they all had smiles on their faces, even the security staff. I had no idea that some jerk threw tomatoes during the event. I did not see it happen. I am glad I went and had a great time!

Saturday evening, the Senate voted to allow the debate and ammending process to begin on the "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act." The vote was 60-39 in favor, with all Democrats and Independents (including Joe Lieberman) supporting and all Republicans opposing the vote for cloture. It is now up to us to stop this bill from passing! Rasmussen reports that just 38% of Americans support the Health Care Plan proposed by President Obama and Congressional Democrats, the lowest level of support to date.

Lindsey Graham questions Eric Holder

Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina is a Senator I disagree with often. However, this time he is right on target. Lindsey Graham's background includes being a member of the United States Air Force, where he served as Judge Advocate during the Gulf War. His job was to debrief pilots on the laws of war. Lindsey Graham thoroughly understands the topic. The questions he put to Attorney General Eric Holder are alarming, but of very real possibility! By trying accused terrorists in criminal court rather than military tribunals would they require a reading of miranda rights? If said rights were not given, would they go free on a technicality? Do they have the right to remain silent, where members of our military cannot interrogate them for vital information? If they choose to represent themselves, will all the secret information and evidence be available for the suspected terrorists to review? What happens if they are found innocent by a jury (as in the case of OJ Simpson) or there is a procedural error (as in the case of Bill Ayers)? President Barack Obama has already accused the US military of torture, will this be used in their own defense? There are so many questions, and so many fears, but very few answers offered by Eric Holder or the Obama Administration. My main question is, why are accused terrorists being considered to receive Constitutional rights and civil liberties while Patriotic American Citizens are being asked to give up theirs? Furthermore, just how does this make Americans safer?

Sarah Palin: "Wisconsin has gone Rogue"

Sarah Palin's much anticipated book, "Going Rogue: An American Life," just launched today and is already a best-seller. I had the honor to see and hear Sarah Palin in person earlier this month. She spoke at a fundraiser for the Wisconsin Right to Life and drew close to 5,000 people by some estimates, in the largest pro-life event in Wisconsin's history. I feel I must mention that because of the nature of the event, that being a fundraiser, the Wisconsin Right to Life chose to close her speech to the press; it was not a request made by Sarah herself as was widely reported. Leading up to the main attraction, there was a lot of anticipation in the air and when Sarah entered the room it was electric and exciting! Sarah herself was down to earth and personable, but her message was weighty and forthright. She began her speech by referencing the new dollar coins where "In God We Trust" is written along the outside of the coin rather than on the face of it, a metaphor for how traditional American values are being pushed out to the fringe. Of this she asked, "Who makes these decisions for us anyway?" Sarah is unapologetically and positively pro-life. She declared being pro-life is "intellectually honest and philosophically pure." With respect to her baby Trig being born with Downs Syndrome and her own daughter going through a teenage pregnancy, she believes "God has asked me to walk-the-walk and not just talk-the-talk." I was amazed at her ability to turn two very trying events into a positive learning experience and opportunity to set example. In regards to Wisconsin specifically, Sarah stated, "There is something special going on in Wisconsin," due to growing support for the sanctity of life and the decline in the number of abortions year after year in this state. She added that according to a recent Gallup Poll, "The majority of all Americans now identify themselves as pro-life as well. . . Thank God!" Sarah ensured us that our "efforts are paying off" and that it is "amazing that all the pro-life legislation passed in Wisconsin have never been overturned by a Court of Laws." Finally, she exclaimed that "Wisconsin has gone rogue!" and identified the Wisconsin Right to Life as one of the models that should be used for "grassroots reaction to a Supreme Court decision." She finished by coming back to that idea of the new dollar coin and told us not to allow ourselves to be "pushed out to the edge." Instead she encourages us to push back, become involved, and make our voices heard. That is exactly what I intend to do. Won't you join me?

WISCONSIN: The "Big Ten"

This morning as I logged into my Yahoo homepage, I immediately noticed the headline, "The Ten Most Cash Strapped States." Without even clicking on the link, I knew Wisconsin had made the list. The "good" news I suppose is that we were at the very bottom of the list at #10! Ten out of fifty, I reminded myself, is not so good however. The really good news is that we will soon have a new Governor, and one can hope, a fiscally responsible Republican Governor!! According to the Pew Center findings, Wisconsin made the list because of its long history of budget shortfalls (currently 23.2%) and a pattern of borrowing to cover operating expenses, making the state poorly positioned to withstand the recent economic downturn. In addition, Wisconsin is heavily dependent on manufacturing. Yet various actions have been taken to actually make Wisconsin less business friendly. Wisconsin jobs and job creators have been exiting the state at an increasing rate. As the economy sputters, so does the manufacturing sector and with that, unemployment surges in the state. Also, Wisconsin's high taxes will make for a slow recovery. If you live in Wisconsin, I am sure none of this comes as a surprise to you. As the Republican Party of Wisconsin Chairman Reince Priebus states, “Wisconsin taxpayers aren’t shocked by this ranking because they’ve seen their taxes climb due to Doyle’s spending increases. Doyle has left our state with a fiscal disaster to clean up, but sadly the taxpayers will be the ones left on the hook for the reckless spending that got us into this mess.” Indeed. While other states were making cuts, lowering taxes, and balancing the budget, Governor Doyle increased state spending by 3.6%. Reince Priebus continued, adding, “Republicans know that to get Wisconsin out of this mess we’ve got to create good paying jobs that contribute to our state’s financial stability." Tiptoeing thru Terrorism

On Thursday, November 5, 2009, the United States Military Base of Fort Hood, Texas was attacked. The lone gunman was Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, a self-professed anti-war Muslim. He opened fire on unarmed soldiers, leaving over 30 injured and 13 dead. The attack was ended when Fort Hood Civilian Police Officer, Kimberly Munley shot Hasan four times, despite being shot herself.

This attack was a frightening wake up call for many Americans. Most people immediately questioned the possible implications of a Muslim American Soldier attacking his own US Military Base. Was this homegrown terror? How could someone like this become a ranking member of the US military? Is there a terror network working on the inside? With so many questions, Americans tuned into the television, searching for answers, only to discover a timid and cautious news media concerned more with political correctness than straightforward reporting. The Internet was a much more reliable source of the information people sought. The news media seemed reluctant to even release the shooter's name, much less confirm his Muslim religion. Martha Radaatz of ABC news stated on air, "I wish his name was Smith" while CBS and NBC failed to note his Muslim religion altogether. Anchors, like Chris Matthews of MSNBC, cautioned the public not to "jump to conclusions" based on the man's ethnicity and religion. Even when it was reported that Hasan shouted, "Allahu Akbar" (or 'God is Great" in Arabic), the common cry of suicide bombers and terrorists, the media failed to point the blame fully at him or explore the possible implications of his battle cry. It didn't take long before the shooter himself actually became the victim through the eyes of the media. Hasan was stressed from his work as a military psychologist. He was depressed from listening to horrible stories of the troops returning home from war. He was teased and ridiculed by his fellow military for being Arabic and Muslim. Can you believe, the same soldiers who were attacked actually assumed blame!?! Never mind that Hasan had Internet postings sympathizing with suicide bombers, "To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate. Its more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause," nor that he was quoted as saying, "Muslims should stand up and fight their aggressor."

After receiving a lecture on diversity and a scolding for profiling by the liberal media, it was refreshing to listen to Conservative talk radio and read the blogs the next day to find people calling the act exactly what it was, Terrorism. So there were people who reacted as I did after all! Laura Ingraham stated without hesitation, "This was the first terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11." Finally, the truth, or at least an open dialogue of that scary possibility. Senator Joe Lieberman, too, called the Fort Hood massacre, "a terrorist act" and Hasan himself, an "Islamic Extremist." Joe Lieberman (I) chairs the Senate Homeland Security Committee and has pledged to initiate a formal investigation into the attack to find any warning signs the army should have recognized. I will be interested to see, just how much this investigation exposes, both about Hasan himself and the possibility of more like him, and just what the military has to endure in regards to political correctness, sensitivity, and diversity. As much as the liberal media wants to deny it, Islamic Extremism is real. There are people who hate us and want to kill us, solely for being American. We have a true enemy and our war efforts are warranted. However, one must first admit there is a problem before one can begin to solve the problem. Thankfully, Joe Lieberman, talk radio, and bloggers immediately identified the problem. The old media is, predictably, still in denial though, offering little hope they are about to change.

County Board Update - November 6, 2009 – by Deloras Vind

It's budget time at the county board. We have a $900,000 shortfall! This is due to a variety of factors:
-$200,000 Managed Care Organization expense
-$280,000 shortfall in Unified Board/Human Services
-12% increase in health insurance rates for employees, a $287,700 increase
-3% wage increase for county employees
-$65,000 decrease in sales tax income
-decrease in new construction
-decrease in state revenue sharing of 2% or $26,723
-decrease in the fund balance sheet
-decrease in revenues from fees etc. in various county department
-decrease in state aids
-The need to balance the budget at county level and keep a healthy general fund

Whew!

The Executive/Finance committee has been working to keep the tax levy to 1.44% increase which is the rate of new growth in the county. They see large budget shortfalls looming for several years in the future. They are recommending the board cut about eleven county employee positions. Human Services will absorb Senior Services and the Health Department to increase efficiency, not cut programs to Trempealeau County residents. This is a difficult and unpopular decision the Executive/Finance members have made. The County Board will vote November 10th.

It has to be mentioned that our Assembly Representative Chris Danou and State Senator Kathleen Vinehout voted to decrease state funding to the county by 2%, plus decrease funding to various departments such as Human Services. They stuck the county with their problems. Yet they voted to increase the over all state budget spending leaving a $2.3 billion deficit for the state. Plus they voted for a property tax increase of $1.5 billion. The county employee health insurance is through the state of Wisconsin , which raised the insurance rates for the county employee’s cadillac health insurance this year by 12% (last year it was an 8% increase) or $287,700 - this amount equals the maximum amount the county can raise the budget! By-the-way, one health insurance perk for county employees is they pay no deductibles. The 3% wage increase for county employees is due to a three year contract of 3% increase per year the county board approved with the union and employees in 2008 (mine was the lone NO vote).

I agree with the Finance/Executive committee recommendations. We need a smaller more efficient county government. The third largest employer in Trempealeau County is the County! It can be done, but as in all politics the tax payer must hold elected officials accountable.

Politics as Usual

This should be an exciting campaign season for the GOP. There is renewed energy in the Conservative movement and renewed interest in our founding documents and the first principles. I myself joined the local party after the recent election loss in 2008. I looked at the loss not as defeat but as opportunity to regain control of the Republican brand. However, I am finding it is a much more daunting task than I had imagined. It seems with all the cries of protest at Tea Parties and Town Halls, our voices are still not being heard. . . even by our own party! The best example of this is the special election for New York's 23rd Congressional District set to occur on November 3rd. Currently it is a 3-way race between Bill Owens (D), Dede Scozzafava (R), and Doug Hoffman (C). What does that "C" designate you ask? Conservative! Apparently even the "R" no longer guarantees that anymore! Conservative Doug Hoffman entered the race late after growing dissent with the Republican Party's choice of the moderate to liberal Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava. Hand-picked by the Republican establishment, Scozzafava has increased taxes, is pro-choice, pro-card check, and union supported. She has received endorsements from moderate Republicans such as Newt Gingerich, while Doug Hoffman, the Conservative candidate received endorsements of true Republicans and true Conservatives, the likes of Governor Sarah Palin, radio talk show host and Constitutional Lawyer Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Conservative Columnist Michelle Malkin, and social conservative and American Values president Gary Bauer, to literally name just a few. This example of the old Republican establishment at odds with the new Conservative movement may be taking place in New York, but there are campaigns like this all across the country, including Wisconsin and including our very district. As we fight to find Conservative candidates we believe in at the local level, the party simply hand-picks candidates they feel have sufficient name recognition or financial backing. This is hardly the democratic process our founders envisioned and we need to wake up, pay attention, and make our voices heard! If we don't, we will be forced to once again hold our noses in the voting booth and sheepishly defend our "Republican" candidate. Worst of all, we will miss out on the biggest opportunity to take back our party. Bum Rush

Last week, Conservative Radio Talk Show Host, Rush Limbaugh was dropped from a group that was looking to buy the St. Louis Rams NFL franchise. Rush was to be a limited partner but was cut out from the group entirely after pressure from the NFL Player's Union and threats of protest from the likes of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. This blatant blacklisting, solely due to personal beliefs, ought to give every American regardless of political affiliation, cause for concern. The fact that a law-abiding American citizen with the necessary means and financial backing was not allowed to purchase something for sale because of his political beliefs is outrageous and frankly, not the America I know. Is this not a free market? Are we not capitalists? Are we not tolerant of individual freedoms and personal expression? There in lies the double-standard. What would have happened if the controversial and liberal hip-hop star Kanye West was denied the right to purchase a football team due to his outrageous comments? We would hear cries of racism with Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson leading the way. Or, how about NBA Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban? He financially backed an anti-american "9-11 Truther" movie. Is that not controversial? Finally, why is the left-wing political hack and MSNBC host, Keith Obermann allowed to be the frontman for NBC's NFL Football Night in America while the right-wing Rush is not allowed to own a team? Since when is it appropriate and acceptable to judge someone for their political affiliation? This stunt was nothing more than a desperate move to keep Conservatism out of mainstream America. Afterall, what is more American and mainstream than NFL Football? The irony is, with this transparent attempt to keep Rush out of the mainstream, even more attention was given to him and the Conservative movement. The refusal and lies told about him only creates more unity. Conservatives will rally around Rush!

Not my Kind

As I am certain you know by now, Congressman Ron Kind is NOT running for Governor. Before you break out the confetti, realize that he will instead be running for re-election as the Representative of the 3rd District in the US Congress, including Trempealeau County. So while he is guaranteed not to be governing our great state, he could very well be representing you and me, again, for yet another term. However, I ask you, would he be representing us? Has he been representing us, the citizens of Trempealeau County? His statement about his decision not to run for Governor was as follows, "My first responsibility must be to get affordable and accessible health care reform passed this year for all Wisconsin families. That is why I cannot run for governor. I have a responsibility and duty to the people of Wisconsin to continue work on the health care reform agenda ahead of us," Kind said. Apparently he has not done much listening at his listening sessions (held in the smallest rural towns he could find in his District) nor has he paid much attention to the polls which indicate that nearly 85% of Americans are satisfied with their current health care. I attended one of his public forums in Whitehall and I got the feeling these "listening sessions" were supposed to be us listening to him, not he to his constituents. I was less surprised by his announcement not to run, than I was by the platform he has chosen to run on. . . . Health Care Reform! Is he that out of touch or is he that indebted to the liberals in Congress, like Nancy Pelosi? Kind is not a leader, he is not a power-player, and he is not a strong or persuasive voice in Congress. Yet, he is our voice. Do you feel as though you are being heard? No, instead, Kind is simply status quo, a yes-man and a vote that the liberals in the House can depend on and therefore could not risk losing. So, their best chance to hold the seat is with Kind. Our best chance at gaining the seat is with WI State Senator Dan Kapanke. Not only is he our best chance, he is one impressive candidate and offers us the best chance we have had in many election cycles! Dan is a leader. He is also a man of the people and of the community. Don't just take my word for it though, do your own research. I urge you to take a look at Senator Dan Kapanke's voting record, then compare it to Kind's. Read Dan's resume and his history with the Coulee Region. Finally, just listen to him speak and call to speak to him yourself! "Free" Health Care is Taxing

This weekend, President Barack Obama appeared on numerous Sunday morning talk shows pushing his proposed Health Care Reform Bill. Obama stated he hasn't been playing his "best game" in getting his message out, as though it were simply his delivery and not the substance of the bill that makes an overwhelming majority of Americans opposed to it! We are reading the bill, understanding the bill, and THAT is why we do not support it! His arrogance is only the beginning. Obama told two incredible lies about the plan this weekend. First, Obama continuously claims that his health care plan will not raise taxes. However, the Joint Committee on Taxation says an individual mandate requiring one to buy insurance IS a tax and WILL affect the middle-class. It is to be structured as a Penalty Exise Tax and it has been determined that it will indeed hit some with incomes of less than $200,000. Secondly, in addition to an increase in taxes, there will also be a decrease in Medicare coverage for seniors, which Obama also denies. The Congressional Budget Office, a non-partisan group, states that seniors enrolled in Medicare Advantage would see their benefits cut in half. The Medicare Advantage plan holders would receive merely half the benefits under the new system than they do now. Furthermore, the Obama administration is seeking to impose "gag orders" on Insurance Companies in an attempt to prohibit them from informing customers on how the proposed Medicare cuts will affect them. All of this without any of the "transparency" we had been promised. The Senate Finance Committee rejected calls for putting the Senate Health Care Bill online for the public to read. In the House of Representatives, however, there is a bipartisan effort to require all legislation be made available online at least 72 hours before the vote. Call and e-mail Congressman Kind and Senators Kohl and Feingold. Tell them to slow down the push for health care reform. Encourage tranparency and online availabilty of all bills as well. In addition, talk with your friends, family, and co-workers and encourage them to speak out!

Constitution Day. It isn't exactly one of the most widely known or deeply celebrated American holidays, yet this year it seems to be garnering more attention and more careful thought since perhaps its very writing. The perseverance of our nation depends entirely on our fidelity to this document. The Constitution is our fundamental law as written by the people. The Constitution is what all actions in this nation must reconcile with. This is why it was so frightening to so many when Barack Obama proclaimed in his inaugural address that it is his desire to "fundamentally change America." To fundamentally change America means to disregard the very principles our nation was founded on, and therefore, the Constitution itself. Not only must the Constitution be upheld, it must also be interpreted honestly and as intended. This belief is what makes one an Originalist. The founders were brilliant in their writing of a timeless document, as they understood the country would grow and change. However, whatever the change, the core principles of the Constitution would always remain applicable. This belief was standard and not even questioned until arose a theory, promoted by many liberals and activist judges, that the Constitution is actually a "living document" which has no set meaning, and is able to change and flow according to the times. This is simply not true. The words chosen in the Constitution are deliberate and the principles upon which it was written have been settled. The fact that we have such indelible standards is also what makes our country so successful. You may find that many liberals like to point out how young a nation the United States of America is. They use this as an argument to supposedly prove how ignorant we actually are when compared to much older nations, like those they revere so highly in Europe. The truth is, even though we are a very young nation, our Constitution is actually the oldest governing document for any country. So, while there are certainly countries older than ours, there is certainly NOT a more stable, and more tested, form of government. We ARE the standard bearer to freedom. 9/12 Tea Parties: March on Washington

As the old saying goes, a picture speaks a thousand words. The well over 1 million protestors who marched on our Nation's capitol on 9/12 spoke also for me. Indeed, they spoke for me and for countless others around the country who could not make the trip to Washington this Saturday. They marched to protest the speed at which our Government is growing, the dizzying increase of our national debt, the threat of suffocating taxes on small businesses, the push for Government run Health Care, and general discontent with the direction this Administration, and Congress, is taking our country. Of course, the media is trying to downplay the crowd, hide the undeniably high turnout, and even distort the intent of the protestors themselves. 9/11: National Day of Remembrance

Is has often been said that the good thing about America is that we move on and forget . . . and the bad thing about America is that we move on and forget. While it is amazing to realize our strength as a nation and our ability to overcome, we must not ever allow ourselves to forget the events of September 11, 2001 nor those that perished that fateful day. As I reflect on that day it now seems so long ago, yet at the same time I remember it as though it were only yesterday. In the news today, there is much discussion about President Obama and his first 9/11 as our Nation's leader and our Commander in Chief. I am not as interested in what he, or the media, says today, but instead what he himself said then, immediately following the country's worst attack in our history. Obama's statment was as follows,

"Beyond the immediate needs to improve security and dismantle organizations of destruction, lay the more difficult job of understanding the sources of such madness. Aside from the fact that he even released this statement as merely a state senator and lawyer, showcasing his obvious feelings of self-importance and boldly foreshadowing his ambitious future, I find fault with the content of the statement itself. Why was his immediate response a call to "understand" the terrorists? Could the statement of "embittered children" and "poverty, ignorance, and despair" be referencing the now all-too-familiar blame America first ideology? Was he, in essence, apologizing for America even then? Contrast his statement with then President Bush, when he declared from a mound of rubble at Ground Zero, "I hear you. The world hears you, and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon!" Straightforward, strong and with action. There is no reason to be nuanced and attempt to gain "understanding" as to why 3,000 Americans had just been violently killed. September 11th has been and should remain a day of resolve and somber reflection. It should be revered for all time as simply, 9/11. Those that perished that day should be honored and prayed for. September 11th should not be labeled anything else. It should be remembered solely for what happened that day and what it meant to our country and countrymen. However, now it is instead being called a "National Day of Service" as declared by President Obama. This calculated name change is an attempt for the left to claim 9/11 as theirs, and their intent is for Americans to forget about the true events of 9/11 and instead focus on being "productive" through liberal agendas, green activities, and the environmental movement. Whatever their vain attempts may be, I know that I will never forget. Don't allow yourself to forget the significance of this day either. Pause to remind yourself. Reflect and remember today and involve your family, friends, and children too. We need these discussions to secure in history, the truth. Now, "let's roll."

How fitting it is that this Blog launches the day after President Obama's Health Care address to Congress, and the Nation. The address was simply an old campaign speech filled with empty promises, half-truths, careful choice of words, and yes, even outright lies. Joe Wilson received much criticism by spontaneously exclaiming, "You Lie!" during the President's speech, but wasn't that what we were all thinking or screaming at the television?
